Jeffrey Thompson's travel sketchbooks

Big Planet Comics' staff (and children's book artist) Jeffrey Thompson happened to mention that he was planning on traveling to Peru this summer and would then be posting his sketchbook online to me today. I was surprised to find out that he's been doing travel sketch books since this one from Belize in 1996. Links to his others are here: Italy & Amsterdam, Iceland & Ireland, France & Verdun, Mexico & Belize.

I love these types of books.

Nick Bertozzi and Jason Little at Big Planet Comics

Nick Bertozzi and Jason Little's trip down from New York City to visit Big Planet Comics went well. Local cartoonists turned out including David Hagen, Jim Dougan, Matt Dembicki as well as comics bloggers Comicsgirl and Randy T. Signed copies of their new books should still be available in the store.

Nick Bertozzi is signing his new book on Lewis and Clark at Big Planet Comics in Bethesda on February 26th from 4-6 pm, and he's accompanied by Jason Little, whose book Motel Art Improvement Service was one of my favorites of 2010.

Gazette features local Maryland stores

Big Planet College Park and Comic Classics are the two stores in
Comic stores struggle to adapt in the digital age
College Park, Laurel stores rely on "guilty pleasure" of books

by Lindsey Robbins
Gazette September 29 2010

Regarding retaining or attracting customers - I realize this is just a blog, but one would think someone at one of the stores would have sent me a note about the article. Also, I've never even heard of Comic Classics*, let alone gotten a note asking to feature a link to them. Sour grapes? or poor business practices?

*they don't appear to have a website either.

"The inside of the store was almost surprisingly clean." Who needs a better recommendation than that?

Brooke A. Allen at Big Planet Comics Vienna

I hadn't heard of Brooke A. Allen before her appearance at Big Planet Comics Vienna - which turns out to be no surprise because she's still at student at SCAD, even though she's got her first graphic novel coming out now. I talked to her briefly, asking about her influences and was surprised to hear Walt Kelly, followed by Jeff Smith. After reading the book, I can definitely see Bone's influence. I enjoyed the story and will run a brief review at the City Paper soon, but here's some photos.

She made a nice drawing in each book - the people in front of me got the bad magician.

My daughter got Mr. Easter.

And I got a self-portrait.

There was a darn big crowd for both Ms. Allen and the 4th of July sale.

100_0461
She kept cranking through the drawings for people and I think the store expected to sell out of the book.

BP had these nice posters on sale for $3. I got mine.
